2008 Bujold Fest!
Hello all!

So, we're coming up on summer and I thought it might be a good time to start thinking about when to do this year's ficathon, which I am offering to run (though if anyone wants to help out, that'd be cool).

I want to do it a bit differently this year, because if I never again have to run around, chasing down fics and arranging pinch hits and holding kittens hostage to make sure everyone gets something in an exchange, it'll be way, way too soon. So rather than do it as a traditional exchange-format ficathon, I thought we might have a fest! I did another fest this way recently and it turned out quite well.

The way this will work is that everyone will offer up prompts from any of the three Bujold 'verses (you may offer as many as you wish). I will then compile the prompts in a separate post and people will comment to claim them. You can claim as many as you want, though I'd recommend against claiming more than you can reasonably write, and I'm completely fine with two or more people claiming the same prompt. If we have enough participants I'd like to spread the posting out over a week with themed days (i.e. Chalion 'verse day, Sharing Knife day, maybe a Crossover day, etc.), with a free-for-all day at the end.

This has a couple of advantages over an exchange format, the first being that it's a lot less stress for both participants and the mod, and the second being that you have a lot more control over what you end up writing. So it's the community and fun of a ficathon without the hassle. And you can write more than one if you want!

So, right now I need to know dates. If we started the ball rolling right now, we could have our posting week in late June/early July, or we could wait a month and do it late July/early August. What works for people?

Oh great! I was thinking about suggesting a ficathon but, remembering my own pinch-hitting miseries, I must have been sekritly hoping someone else would offer to run it first *g* So I'm very grateful to you, and I love the sound of this way of doing it. Definitely count me in!

Excellent! Do you have a preference for dates or is anytime this summer good for you?
Altariel: Gregoraltariel on May 5th, 2008 06:10 pm (UTC)
Oops, yes, forgot that bit: either dates should be fine, perhaps a slight preference for later in the summer (another ficathon story due early June).

Duly noted!

Either set of dates works for me. :-)

Awesome. Thanks!

I'd prefer the later date, but it's not a major issue.

So noted!

wonderful set-up! I can do either, as I'll be equally busy... unless I get laid off in late June.
sahiya on May 5th, 2008 10:37 pm (UTC)
Well, let's hope that doesn't happen! We seem to be leaning towards the later date.

I like this set-up as well. It generates a lot of fic, too.

Sounds good to me! I already have things due in both late June and late July, plus a con in the middle of July, so I guess my vote would be early August. *g*

That's mine, too, actually. I have SoG days in both late June and late July.

July/early August is better for me - I have a lot of stuff on in May/June.

It's nice to have new things to read on a cold winter night.

That sound like a great format, and I'd love to participate. I'm going to be away at the end of June/start of July, so I'd prefer the later dates.

All right, that seems to be the general consensus!

I like this format as well. Exchanges are fun, but they can also be frustrating (she says while writing the last pinch hit for a ficathon she ran in January).

July/August would be better for me too. The feast format looks great!

That seems to be the consensus. Excellent!

Just remember, Our Author is the Guest of Honor at the WorldCon early in August. What with preparations, the con, and after-con activities, that may knock a lot of folks out for a week or two. For example, we'll be there the 5th to the 12th, with limited if any net access. I'll be thrilled to read the cool fics, but it may take a while to get to them.

Hmmm. True, but in the grand scheme of things I doubt there are that many members of the fandom going, and everyone who's responded so far (excepting, of course, yourself) has expressed a preference for early August. I'll see how the dates fall out.

I'm on for later too. June is going to hell in a handbasket and it's not even started yet!

All right, sounds like later is better seems to be the consensus.
