Bujold Fest 2009 Prompts Post!
Hello all!

It's getting to be ficathon/fest time again, and I've volunteered to help with it this year. I'm borrowing sahiya's bus to do it because, hey, buses with sunroofs are cool.

In other words, last year's format seemed to work really well, so let's go with it again. For those who are new or have forgotten, here's how it works:

1. Comment to this post between now and Saturday (July 11) with prompts for any of the Bujold fandoms: Vorkosigan, Chalion, Sharing Knife, or Spirit Ring.
2. Next Sunday (July 12), I'll post all the prompts organized into some sort of groupings (by fandom of course, then probably character or pairing or some recurrent theme that has emerged).
3. Prompts will be open for claiming until the following Saturday (July 18).
4. A calendar showing which prompts will be assigned to which days will be posted on Sunday, July 19.
5. Write, draw, or otherwise create fannish content for your prompt, and post it on the day for that prompt. (
6. Posting will be the week of August 16-22, with a free-for-all day on the 23rd.

Prompts should be at least a character or pairing and something that answers one of the remaining key questions of "where," "when," or "how." For example, "Miles/Ekaterin after DI," or "Beatriz in class with Iselle." They can absolutely be more elaborate, but preferably something short of a detailed outline.

Posting a prompt does not commit you to writing or creating something. Please feel free to prompt away regardless of whether you think you'll be writing/drawing/whatever!

Other guidelines:

Minimum story length is 500 words.
Minimum art/craft/mix/vid ... I have no idea how to quantify, but it should be a bit more than something dashed off in ten minutes.

To sum up:

Prompting: July 5-11
Prompt Claiming: July 12-18
Posting: August 16-22 + free-for-all on August 23

Please feel free to ask questions in comments as well as sharing prompts!

Oooh, oooh! Can I request prompts even though I've never written in this fandom and probably won't? If I'm allowed, Dono/Donna Vorrutyer on Beta Colony.

Yes, absolutely. I just edited the post to clarify that. Thanks for being our first prompt!!

1) Ezar as Piotr's military apprentice, in the late period of the Cetagandan war

2) Teenage Aral's summer vacations with Prince Xav, a very different man from his father.

3) AU. On an unnamed world claimed by Barrayar, Captain Vorkosigan meets Commander Naismith - hermaphrodite.

4) Young Miles rides Fat Ninny in competition.

5) Miles has to catch up at the Academy, and impress his fellow-students and instructors who think he's there because of nepotism.

6) Commodore Tung and Captain Thorne discuss their mystery Admiral and figure out his secret.

7) The myth of Admiral Naismith in the media: so how did the Marilacans turn Dagoola into a movie?

couple of comments on your first two suggestions
1) Ooh! I've always wanted to read stories of Piotr in the First Cetagandan War.

2) I thought Prince Xav was killed by the death squads (the massacre that sparked the civil war when Aral was 11). I can't find confirmation of that at the moment though, so it might just be something I assumed without evidence. That does make me think about Piotr at that time - we see a lot of the effect of his mother's death on his psyche, but very little about his father.

Good prompts!

Prompt: a "conversation" (how you manage it is up to you) between the three generations of Botharis: Elena, her father, and her daughter.

The limerick (and letters) included with the cat blanket Ellie Quinn sent for Miles and Ekaterin's wedding.

Alternatively, Baz' return to Barrayar. 'Home' just doesn't quite fit the same way it used to.

Caz' input on selecting a tutor for for Iselle and Bergon's children.

Vorkosigan novels: Miles discovers that, at long last, he can redeem his promise to Arde Mayhew. It appears there is one last set of RG Necklin rods available in one corner of the Cetagandan Empire. Now the only problem that remains: just how to acquire them!

If one can repeat prompts from last year, I'd love to see more on Cordelia and the Doctor (Doctor Who).

Last year, more than one person could claim the same prompt. Is that going to happen again this year?

Re: Question
Sure. I'd thought about limiting it, but really, different people will have different takes on the prompts. So if you see a prompt you like and it has already been claimed, you can still claim it.

What prompted the Cetagandans to nuke Vorkosigan Vashnoi? What was the straw that broke the camel's back there? Was the decision to do so unanimous, or was there dissent?

An alternative POV for the Vordarian pretendership. Some mid-ranking Vor-ling officer caught in the middle.

Cordelia and Aral on Beta Colony, any way, any how. Perhaps escorting Mark to school? Or in that year between the heart surgery and Sergyar?

Cordelia as matriarch.

Cordelia and mother and brother, post marriage to Aral.

Go on, guess who my favorite character is. I'll give you three guesses, even.

Um, Bothari? ;-)

Ista and Cazaril, after "Paladin of Souls", the humour of the gods

Ekatarin and Cordelia, on managing Miles

Cazaril, post-"Curse of Chalion", "see ourselves as others see us"

Fawn and Dag, in between the last chapter and the epilogue of "Horizon"

Berry, falling for a farm boy

Miles, time travel

Cazaril and Severus Snape (Harry Potter); endurance (yes, I don't know how you could manage such a crossover, but it's something I'd like to see)

Cazaril and Sam Gamgee (Lord of the Rings); service

Miles and Honor Harrington, "how much for just the planet?"

Vorkosigan Prompt: What happens when Mark's Durona group finally comes up with the formula for life extension aka immortality?

I have a snippet for this, but this idea is in cannon and should be explored by all. Good luck. -SB

..This looks like a lot of fun!

Vorkosific set during 'Memory' (after Nasmith's forced retirement but before Illyan's problem comes up), during which Miles wakes up and everything goes wrong. In small, petty, increasingly annoying and ultimately hilarious ways.

Again set during or just after 'Memory' (just read it so it's on my mind): Ivan calls Illyan da, and hijinks ensue. Smug!Miles a bonus.

(Oh, by the way, can sixathon affiliate with you?)

I'm not the overall community mod, so I'll refer the affiliation quetion to sahiya. Cool prompts!

Some years ago, I read C. Northcote Parkinson's fictional biography of Horatio Hornblower, and I've wanted to try something similar for Miles - except that the biographer can't get at the classified material.
